Dressmaker S 2402 sewing machine with cams (without cams)

Now I'm going to tell you about the Dressmaker S 2402 that I purchased at the Family Thrift Store for $12.51.  I didn't realize that the machine required cams and it didn't come with any.  It might actually be one of the only machines I've purchased that I regret.

I don't have a manual for it, and the only ones I find on line cost $10.00.  Although it does have a different color to it, it comes with a case, (as opposed to a cabinet!)

Enough already, just put up the pictures!

  1. I just bought one of these myself. Also thrift shop, also camless. I bought it because I needed parts for a similar Japan-made metal machine, but now that I have it, I can't bear to tear it down. The color alone makes me want it to live.

    1. There are vintage sewing machine groups that might have a member with cams for this.

And there is a cam only group too.

Vintage Sewing Machines with 40K members is one, there are also Japanese badged machine ones too.

  2. I bought my Dressmaker machine in 1976. No model # on it. Still using it, still love it. Working on a quilted wall hanging. Just made a dog coat and boots. Have all the cams and manual. Would not trade it in for anything. Had it refinished a year ago. They put on some nasty plastic pedal that broke a few months later. Replaced it with a Singer metal pedal, easiest repair ever, for $9.95. Won't trade it for anything!

  3. Well, I am about to maybe pick one of these up and detest all the 'manual maggots' charging $10-15 for manuals they did not create or have any rights to. Sewing machines is the only product I have seen this phenomena - tools, appliances, etc. and everything else I have I can find the manuals for free. If anybody has this manual in PDF form could you please email it? Or if only paper, scan it? Please consider joing one of the Yahoo or FB groups dedicated to VSMs and upload it to share. If you send it to me I will be sure it gets in the groups.

  4. I just picked one of these up for free, also camless, but I am happy with just the regular stitch and zig zag. The thing is built like a tank compared to the singer the Singer that I have now. The bobbin, bobbin case and the ring were bouncing around in the bottom of the case when I got it. I am in dire need of a manual. I did see some demos on YouTube and this looks like a nice machine if you can get up to speed on using it.

BTW, James I agree 100% Re: the manual maggots, great term to add to the lexicon.

  5. I bought it for $35 about 2 years ago at a thrift shop, no cams or manuals. A local shop goes over all the machines sold, so it had been checked out, and was running. The motor on mine says "Made in Taiwan." I wanted to learn how to sew, and not spend $1500 on a machine. That said, I love it. I mostly do quilt piecing on it. I'm doing a denim patch quilt now, and it handles it beautifully. I actually think it is easier to learn on these machines, without the fear that I'll do something to ruin an expensive computer component on other ones. I agree about the manual.

It hums along, and works beautifully. I finally found someone to teach me to sew clothing, and I'm start next week. I'm going to use this machine. I have my mother's never used Electro Hygiene (product of Royal Vacuum, and popular in OH. Some models were from Japan, and rebranded.)

I keep looking at all the "nice" new ones, but... if something goes wrong, it is EXPENSIVE to fix. Why do I need 600 stitches? I mostly quilt. I can't see myself making super fancy clothing with super fancy material because we aren't super fancy people. A lot of it is selling something you don't need. For quilting, a strait stitch is all you need.

  6. Just passed on one of these at a thrift for $35. Had no cams figured that was a deal breaker... Built like a tank and inside its dusty case it looked new.

  8. Have same machine. No cams or accessories came with it. Dirty and needed oiling. Previous owners rough with it. Had to straighten slightly take up lever and very top first thread guide. Had to buy a replacement slide plate spring. Machine works. I found cam set (very expensive). It us a bit noise compared to other Japanese machines but can't complain about stitching. No manual. I can't figure out what the small knob to right does? The small knob to left sets the zigzag width but that other knob not clear what it does?

    1. Were they specifically for a Dressmaker machine? I just got my machine with no cams and can't find them. I am tempted to purchase cams for a different machine to see if by chance they will work. Curious to know if yours were Dressmaker cams for 2402 or something else.
